Visitors to Sherrardspark Wood are being treated to exceptionally rich and varied birdsong this spring.  Many wood wardens reported hearing a cuckoo on separate occasions on 4 and 5 May.  We have not heard one in the woods for years so maybe it was just a case of being in the right place at the right time.

During our Spring Bird guided walk led by Ken Smith on a cold and wet morning at the beginning of April we noted twenty four species of birds. Here is a list of birds in order of appearance:
Wren
Robin
Blue tit
Nuthatch
Great tit
Treecreeper
Song thrush
Chiffchaff
Magpie
Blackbird
Mistle thrush
Jay
Great spotted woodpecker
Wood pigeon
Chaffinch
Coal tit
Goldcrest
Stock dove
Blackcap
Jackdaw
Green woodpecker
Buzzard
Pheasant
Marsh tit

Linda Smith said that on our monthly surveys at this time of year we would also usually expect to see/hear Long-tailed tit, Crow and Dunnock and we often see Bullfinch, Sparrowhawk and Red Kite too, but the conditions on 9 April were not the best!

Chris Cooke was on hand with his camera to photograph the birds. Please visit our gallery to see more images of birds in Sherrardspark Wood.
