Work parties have been busy twice a week, as usual. Here are a few highlights of what we completed during spring and early summer....
- Coppicing the area near the ponds near the Red Lion entrance, building deer baskets and log piles;
- Clearing vegetation in the area over the stream from the coppice area, creating more log piles and also digging habitat pits;
- Planting more than 150 tree whips in the new coppice area, plus a further 150 or so in various locations around the woods;
- Noticing the amazing natural regeneration growth of tiny trees in the new coppice area;
- Processing logs into firewood (including kindling) for delivery to our customers, firstly from the Dell and currently from the Red Lion entrance area;
- Extending the new path surface on FP 16 (near Rectory Road) and FP 46, requiring the shifting of a lot of gravel and grit;
- Sanding and oiling benches throughout the woods.
And here is the work we are tackling now, up to the summer break...
- Finishing the processing and delivery of firewood;
- Finishing the extensions of new surfaces for FP46;
- Starting a new surface for a different footpath;
- Pulling bracken in the Sefton area;
- Continuing to maintain benches, monoliths and ladder board signs;
- Starting to install replacement footpath waymarker posts around the woods - see below.
There have been numerous positive and appreciative comments from passers-by in the woods thanking us for our efforts, which is very welcome to all of us.
